CLEVELAND, Ohio – February 28, 2013 – For decades, Calgon Carbon Corporation has been the world leader in the production of activated carbon products. Activated carbon is a porous material used to remove organic compounds from liquids and gases through a process called adsorption. Made from bituminous coal or char from wood and nut shells, activated carbon is used in the purification of drinking water, treatment of poisoning victims, purifying air emissions from industrial sites, and performing groundwater remediation among hundreds of other useful applications.
During the production process, Calgon Carbon Corporation experienced dust control problems in its material handling system. Although its dust collection system effectively captured fugitive dust left over from the activated carbon production processes, the disposal of dust was problematic and inefficient. A messy screw conveyer system allowed fugitive dust to escape at the discharge point and enter the work environment. In addition, this system had a tendency to overfill the collection bin, causing extra labor, inefficient collection of dust, and a hazardous work environment. Looking for a solution to this problem, Calgon Carbon’s process engineers turned to Aerodyne Environmental, Inc., an industry in dust collection systems.
Calgon Carbon’s engineering staff decided to replace its existing screw conveyor system with a stainless steel model of Aerodyne’s StopTight® Slide Gate Valve. The Slide Gate was installed to meter the dust discharged from the system while providing a dust-tight seal for the work environment. The activated carbon dust is then compressed in a ribbon blender, allowing it to be reused or disposed of.
Aerodyne’s Slide Gate Valve proved to be an excellent solution to Calgon’s problem, preventing unwanted dust from overloading the bin with its tight and durable seal. The superior material control from the Slide Gate Valve fills the bin without overfilling. Pneumatic operation means more effective, precise operation and less necessary labor, along with a cleaner work environment for employees.
Aerodyne’s unique setup of the Slide Gate Valve is what makes the successful difference. Other Slide Gates are confined to only move in a horizontal direction, leading to the Slide Gate falling out of alignment or wearing the edge out. This destroys the seal and allows particles to leak out through the closed gate. Aerodyne’s Slide Gate Valve fixes this problem; instead of simply moving from side to side, the Slide Gate Valve utilizes vertical movement springs, creating a tighter, longer lasting seal with the lid.
